Goji Berries: Health Benefits Since the 7th Century

A Goji berry, also known as wolfberry, is the fruit of the boxthorn plant, which is grown mainly in Asia.  Due to the nature of the fruit, they are generally only available in a dry form and have a texture similar to a raisin.  Though they can be grown worldwide, the main commercial producers of the fruit are China and Thailand.  Goji berries are usually cooked before eaten and can also be used in soups and teas. The fruit has been reported to have many health benefits and has been used by the Chinese as a medicinal fruit since the 7th century.

Goji berries contain zeaxanthin, a carotenoid that acts as an antioxidant and is linked to increased retinal health. The berries provide several other potential health benefits, including increased resistance to inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases, immune system health and eye health as well.  Goji berries contain over eleven essential minerals, six vitamins and eighteen amino acids.  The berries are a source of calcium, iron and potassium.  Given the healthful nature of goji berries, they are certainly worth adding into your daily diet!
